MCPS Announces 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year
Posted on 12/16/2022

Julie Monday, reading specialist at Margaret Beeks Elementary School, was selected as the MCPS Teacher of the Year for 2022-2023.

Dedicated to creating connections between students and reading, Monday introduced STEM concepts and learning in her reading instruction to keep students engaged in reading activities. “Literacy-based STEM units engage all students, despite their reading level,” said Monday. Monday expanded STEM units in her work with students to continue the cross-curricular focus. “This opened the door for teachers and students alike to explore and expand their creative thinking,” said Monday.

When asked about Monday, Principal Beth Poff responded, “She knows reading better than anybody I have ever worked with. She can look at the data and figure out exactly what the child needs.”

Monday has more than 15 years of experience as an educator in third grade, fifth grade, and now as a reading specialist. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Troy University, a master’s degree from Concordia University, and will earn her doctorate from Liberty University in 2024.
