Transfer Requests

The Montgomery County School Board has approved a school division transfer policy that provides the following guidelines for students who wish to transfer schools within the division.

  • Transfer requests will be considered for students in elementary school only.

  • MCPS will not accept transfer requests for students in grades 6 through 12.

  • MCPS will verify the residency of all 5th grade students to ensure that students are enrolled in the middle school within the attendance area in which they reside the following year.

  • Students currently in grades 6 through 12 as transfer students (approved prior to October 3, 2017) will be allowed to remain in their current school through graduation

  • Exceptions may be granted for elementary students rising into middle school who already have an older sibling in grades 6 through 12.

  • Children of year-long contracted employees of Montgomery County Schools may be permitted to attend a middle school or high school within the attendance zone of their parent’s assigned work location only.

  • The only non-resident students who will be considered for admission to Montgomery County Schools are children of year-long contracted employees of MCPS.

  • Other exceptions may be granted by the superintendent or designee in cases of extenuating circumstances and as provided in Policy 7-2.2 and 7-2.4.
