Courses Intended for Students Pursuing New Credit

Montgomery County Public Schools is pleased to offer “new” courses for students during the summer of 2019. These courses allow qualified students to graduate early or provide opportunities for additional elective courses in the following school year’s class schedule. Students who satisfactorily complete course requirements will have these credits recorded on their MCPS transcript.

Students will complete their seat hours within the standard Summer School schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:30-2:00, June 10 - June 28 at Montgomery Central. The remaining hours will be completed independently through an online program and students will have access beginning on June 3, with posted teacher office hours for support. All students will need regular access to a computer with internet availability.

New Course Requirements:

  • A minimum number of students must enroll in order to offer the course.
  • Course fees are due by orientation night and are non-refundable (except in the event the class does not achieve minimum enrollment).
  • A required orientation meeting will be held on Tuesday May 28th at Montgomery Central at 6 pm.
  • Students and parents will meet the teacher and receive general course guidelines.
  • Students will be given their online access information and may begin their coursework.
  • Students must:
    • Complete and submit the Summer Academy enrollment form.
    • Attend the orientation meeting on May 28 at MC at 6 pm.
    • Pay course fees by May 28, 2019.
    • Complete both the independent modules and attend the in-class sessions.
    • Complete all coursework by June 28, 2019.

Early Graduation
This program is intended for students who have completed their Junior Year and can graduate with the completion of English 12 and VA/US Government. The student’s transcript will be reviewed very closely to ensure that all other requirements, including verified credits, have been met. This course will require a substantial amount of out-of-class work as the student is awarded two credits upon satisfactory completion. A high degree of self-motivation and the ability to work with limited supervision is necessary for success. Students who successfully complete graduation requirements will be awarded diplomas from their home schools at a summer graduation ceremony on June 28, 2019.

  • There are no end-of-course SOL requirements.
  • All coursework must be completed by June 28, 2019.

Economics and Personal Finance

This course will allow students to add one additional elective credit to their regular academic schedule in the new school year provided all course requirements are met.

  • There are no end-of-course SOL requirements.
  • All coursework is online and must be completed by June 28, 2019.

Health/Physical Education 9
This course is intended for rising freshmen who want the opportunity to earn a credit prior to entering high school and/or enjoy a unique PE experience. Students will complete the health curriculum through the independent online modules. During their time at Montgomery Central, students will take a variety of field trips to explore physical activities. Sample trips include: the Christiansburg Aquatic Center for swimming lessons, disc golf at Mid-County Park, and outdoor adventures at the Izaak Walton League Park. This course awards one credit.

  • There are no end-of-course SOL requirements.
  • Fees include all admission fees and bus transportation fees.
