The mission of the Facilities and Planning Department is to partner with the schools in creating environments conducive to student success by providing purposeful, comfortable, aesthetic, clean, safe, and accessible learning and activity spaces in meeting academic achievement goals.  

The Maintenance Department is staffed by a combination of license tradesmen and workers who provide services in electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC), carpentry, painting, groundskeeping, and preventive maintenance.  The department  is responsible for maintaining 20 schools and 5 support buildings for a total of approximately 2 million square feet of building space and 570 acres of grounds.  We are committed to being responsive, flexible, innovative, and efficient.  We work hard to provide up-to-date, relevant, and accurate information.  

Each school year, the department receives in excess of 6,000 work orders for various services.  The Maintenance Department utilizes a web-based work order system, School Dude, which allows building sites to request needed repairs.  Through our work order system, we are able to track and manage our maintenance requests in order to assure we are accommodating the needs of our schools by providing quality work in a timely manner.  Personnel are on call to respond to any emergency situation.  

The Construction Department’s knowledgeable staff strives to provide the students and staff of the division with facilities that are not only appealing but functional and energy efficient.  The Construction Department works in planning, development, construction and management of capital projects.  They work closely with local agencies, engineers, and architects in facility construction. They are responsible for assuring the contracted work being performed for MCPS projects are completed and free from defects and deficiencies.
